Shock survey disputed by Edinburgh Airport

To the surprise of many passengers , Edinburgh Airport has been named as the fifth worst airport in the world according to a survey from AirHelp.

To assess airports, AirHelp examined data from December 22, 2016 to March 20, 2017 taking into account delayed and cancelled flights, quality and service ratings taken from Skytrax rankings, and social media sentiment analysis. Three British airports featured in the ten lowest ranked, London Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh. Heathrow was ranked as the top ranked airport in the UK.
Edinburgh Airport have disputed the results of the survey and the scoring system implemented. A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: “We don’t think that this so called AirHelp score helps anyone. “It’s wrong and we don’t recognise the figures given or agree with the weighting. “Our passengers and airlines tell us how we’re performing and we’ll continue to work hard at giving the best service we can, measuring our performance and listening to make sure we get better.”
The study was carried out at 76 airports across the world and also looked to establish the best airline. Marius Fermi, UK Country Manager at AirHelp said: “It’s important – now more so than ever – that passenger service is a top priority of both airlines and airports, ensuring they receive the experience they deserve, so it’s fantastic to see that Singapore is setting the standard for customer-first service. “It’s disappointing, then, that British airports like Edinburgh are landing at the bottom of the global list – providing passengers with lower than average quality and service, more flight delays and cancellations than others, and low-levels of positive social media engagement. Airports and airlines should take note ahead of the travel rush this summer.” Flybe came in 22nd, while Ryanair and Monarch featured in the bottom five of the rankings which measure on-time performance, quality of service and how well airlines process claims for compensation.

Edinburgh Airport is the UK’s fastest growing airport

Edinburgh Airport has welcomed new figures showing that it is officially the UK’s fastest growing airport in terms of international passengers.

The 21% growth in international passengers from 2015 – 2016 at Edinburgh pipped the Luton for top spot in the table of UK airports above 1m international passengers.

This successful expansion has been reinforced by the fact Edinburgh Airport now, for the first time ever, has over 200 routes on sale.

Welcoming this Edinburgh Airport’s Chief Executive Gordon Dewar, said: “This expansion of routes in and out of Edinburgh Airport generates more growth for Scotland’s economy and creates work and leisure opportunities for people and businesses.

“Growth also continues to expand the opportunity for people from overseas to come and visit Scotland.

“We have a healthy equilibrium of inbound and outbound passengers with the most balanced mix of any UK airport outside London.

“The blend of increasing long haul routes, the enhanced choice to destinations across Europe and an unrivalled range of services to London and domestic locations has proved to be a winning combination.

“This growth reinforces the strength and appeal of Edinburgh as a destination and the global draw of Scotland, giving us greater confidence as we look to the future.”

200 Routes with growth driven by:

34 new routes will start in 2017 and will be operated by 9 airlines.
12 routes will be additional services to existing destinations thus providing more choice to our passengers (e.g. Thomson to Malaga, Aegean to Athens or Ryanair to Budapest)
2 routes will provide a greater connectivity over our existing hub network
– Flybe will strengthen connections over Heathrow, where passengers will be able to connect to most of non-BA airlines (e.g. Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, Singapore Airlines). This will fill the gap left after Virgin Atlantic left the market
– Eurowings introductions to EDI completes the Lufthansa Group hub network from EDI. Lufthansa currently operates 2x daily Frankfurt service departing at lunch time and early evening. Eurowings service will be coming to EDI in early morning thus giving Lufthansa the benefit of having 3 bank structures (morning, afternoon, evening) throughout the day from EDI and further improving their connectivity from EDI (the morning flight from Munich will flow pax to Europe and beyond via MUC, while the afternoon flight from Frankfurt will bring pax from all over the world)
Edinburgh has also strengthened connectivity to regional France with direct services to Nantes, Toulouse, Carcassonne. Regional France is very popular with EDI passengers
Ryanair’s announcement of 3 new Polish routes from EDI will take the overall number of EDI – Poland routes to 8 which is the largest number of routes to Poland from any Scottish airport
Norwegian routes to North America strengthen our transatlantic offerings and create completely new markets for people visiting Scotland and the USA. This should significantly boost our inbound mix of passengers from North America.

The airport said it was expecting its busiest ever new year as revellers flock to the city from around 70 countries. Gordon Dewar from Edinburgh Airport said: “Last year’s arriving passenger figures in the run-up to New Year smashed all records of Scottish Airports, so to go one better this year is a great achievement.

“People want to visit us – and at this time of year they want to party with us.”

The celebrations start with the torchlight procession on December 30, when 10,000 torchbearers will travel from George IV Bridge to Calton Hill for the fireworks finale.

Biffy Clyro will headline this year’s Concert in the Gardens on Hogmanay, with performances planned by Maximo Park, Slaves and Idlewild among others.Princes Street party Edinburgh ,and Hogmanay celebrations

Edinburgh Airport disruption at night

A major roadworks programme begins tonight on an approach road to Edinburgh Airport.

Essential night-time maintenance to improve the surface on the M9 at Junction 1, southbound, will take place over the next four nights on a  crucial route for those travelling to catch flights out of Edinburgh Airport.

Neil Greig, of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, told travellers they must adjust their arrangements to ensure they reach the airport in time.

He said: “Doing the roadworks overnight certainly minimises the disruption to motorists.

“But this is a crucial route to the airport and is used 24/7 because flights are departing and arriving late at night and during the early hours.

“And motorists have also got to remember that some of the worst tailbacks in Scotland have been caused by contractors over-running the time they should be working.

“This could cause major obstacles for air travellers if it happens on their day of departure.”

The slip road will be closed from 8pm until 6am on each of the four nights.

Road users are being warned to allow for an additional journey time of around 11 minutes in completing the diversion.

The 1.1km long stretch of road at Newbridge Junction, as well as lane 1 of the M9 adjacent to the works, will be closed during the works and a clearly signed diversion will be in place.

Traffic will be diverted to the M8 Junction 2 to travel eastbound towards Edinburgh, continuing to Hermiston Gait and then be directed back along the westbound M8 to the Junction 2 offslip, returning to Newbridge Roundabout by exiting the diversion at Junction 1 using the northbound off-slip.
